Powering Africa's Future: Renewable Energy and Emerging Technologies
As Africa continues to experience rapid population growth and urbanization, the demand for reliable and sustainable energy sources is more critical than ever. Here are some key points:
🌍 600 million people in sub-Saharan Africa still lack access to electricity (International Energy Agency - IEA).
⚡ Power outages are frequent across the continent, highlighting the need for reliable energy solutions.
Renewable Energy: Africa's Potential
☀️ Solar Power: Africa is endowed with some of the best solar radiation levels globally, especially in Egypt, Namibia, and South Africa.
6% annual increase in solar capacity.
🌬️ Wind Energy: Countries like Morocco, Kenya, and Ethiopia are accelerating their wind energy efforts with new wind farms.
💧 Hydropower: Countries such as Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo are spearheading large-scale hydroelectric projects.

Financial Support & Investments
💰 The African Development Bank (AfDB) has committed $20 billion to green energy initiatives over the next decade.

The Future: Small Modular Reactors (SMRs)

Renewable Energy Investment
Significant investments are being made in renewable energy projects, with a clear indication of the regions leading the way and those in the process of building their energy infrastructure.
Key Highlights
Southern Africa is leading with the highest current and under-construction renewable energy capacity, totaling 24,840 MW in current capacity and an additional 10,095 MW under construction. This demonstrates a strong push toward scaling renewable energy sources, driven by both national governments and private sector investments in technologies like solar, wind, and hydro power.
East Africa follows with a total capacity of 15,201 MW, combining 10,402 MW of current capacity and 5,481 MW under construction. Countries like Kenya and Ethiopia are spearheading this growth, primarily through wind and geothermal power, offering a promising model for other regions.
North Africa shows a smaller total capacity, with 13,110 MW in total, but the high concentration of energy projects in Egypt and Morocco indicates a concentrated push toward renewable energy in this region, especially with solar and wind energy.
West Africa has 5,481 MW in current capacity and 6,298 MW under construction, showcasing strong investments in renewable projects. The region is increasingly focusing on solar and hydropower, with countries like Nigeria and Ghana leading in solar energy initiatives.
Central Africa has the smallest renewable energy capacity, with 2,209 MW in current capacity and 4,253 MW under construction. Despite these figures, the region holds untapped potential for renewable energy growth, particularly in hydroelectric and solar energy projects.
Country Spotlight: Kenya 🇰🇪

Kenya generates over 75% of its electricity from renewable sources, with geothermal (45%) and hydropower (30%) leading the mix. This makes it one of Africa’s front-runners in clean energy innovation. However, with 2.5 TWh of unmet demand and 20% of the country's power still coming from off-grid systems, there is a growing need for scalable, reliable baseload solutions.
Kenya has abundant geothermal energy due to its location along the East African Rift System (EARS), which is an active tectonic plate boundary. This geological region is characterized by significant volcanic activity and tectonic movements, leading to high heat flow beneath the Earth's surface. The Rift Valley, where Kenya is situated, is a key hotspot for geothermal resources. Kenya has abundant geothermal energy due to these key factors:
Tectonic activity: The East African Rift causes fractures in the Earth's crust, allowing heat to rise.
Volcanic activity: Active volcanoes in the Rift contribute to heat generation.
High heat flow: Geothermal reservoirs are relatively shallow, making them accessible for energy extraction.
Kenya needs more diverse energy sources due to growing demand from a rapidly expanding population and economy, and to ensure energy security amidst risks from climate change and fluctuating rainfall. Current reliance on geothermal and hydroelectric power also limits access to remote regions, making it challenging to provide reliable electricity nationwide.
SMRs can be the answer, as they are compact, flexible, and capable of being deployed in diverse locations, including off-grid areas. They offer base-load power, providing consistent and reliable energy, unlike intermittent renewables. Additionally, SMRs have a low environmental impact compared to traditional nuclear reactors, and their adoption can enhance energy independence, reducing reliance on imported energy.
